EVIL DEAD: THE GAME - Mission 1 - Walkthrough

Don't just complete it. Survive in style.

OBJECTIVE 1

Part 1, Knowby Cabin  >  Payne Manor

Resources:
. Knowby Cabin - x4 Shell Boxes, x1 Cola, X2 Match Boxes
. Deadite - x1 Shell Box (Payne Manor)
. Payne Manor - x5 Shell Boxes, x1 Match Box, x1 Legendary Shotgun, x1 Legendary Chainsaw

When you start in the Knowby Cabin, look around and loot all the ammo and matches from every room. And the well just outside. There are no enemies here, at the moment, so you are safe within the Knowby Cabin area. The journey ahead will be a tricky one and you'll need all the goodies from in here.

Firstly you'll have been prompted to go to Bronson Caves area, to the north of the map.

However, we will initially be avoiding this objective and heading straight to Payne Manor. To the south. There will be a total of two Deadites to defeat on the way to Payne Manor and four Deadites inside and around the Manor.

Now, to get to the Manor is the safest way possible, simply follow the main roads. See the map below for the route I mean.

Tip #1: Try to stick to the roads on your travels. Deadites and possessed trees hide themselves fairly well in the thick forest areas. Roads, however, are open and help you to spot upcoming threats more easily while also providing room for fights.

You'll follow the main road for some distance and then use an almost hidden dirt track from the main road that leads to the Manor.

The two Deadites will be waiting, outside of the Knowby Cabin, along the dirt path. Each can be killed individually, as long as you tackle them as you see them. Running past will not only devastate your stamina bar, and thus leave you vulnerable in combat, but will also allow enemies to gang up on you.

Tip #2: You really don’t want to have to tackle enemies in groups if you can avoid it. On occasions, where taking on groups is unavoidable, use the shotgun to thin them from a distance.

For these Deadite grunts scattered along the roads, take your time, and use your chainsaw. The combat is probably the hardest thing to wrap your head around. Especially if (like me) you're slow on reactions. Using the chainsaw from this early point allows you to learn the game's combat. You'll see that it requires plenty of good timing, to both defend and attack. Remember a true Deadite hunter needs to be skilled in ranged and melee combat to survive.

Tip #3: Going forward, use your chainsaw as much as possible. You’ll need to save the shotgun and its ammo for trickier situations. Such as large groups or strong individuals.

When you reach the manor, directly in of you, will be an entrance guarded by a heavy Deadite. These would normally have been introduced at the Bronson Caves, but this guide obviously swaps round the order of things. He is one hell of a beefy boy and will take plenty of punishment before finally dying. Use your shotgun to kill him, but make your limited shots count. Also try to avoid melee attacks. He cannot be stunned and will always slap you back far harder than you can slap him. Give him the run-around, but don't wander to far. Keep it tight and utilise the dodge mechanic. He will dish out plenty of AoE (area of effect) attacks and charge at you. Beware that you can't run or dodge when reloading so timing your shots is key. Eventually you’ll bring him down.

Also be prepared, once you trigger him a second regular Deadite may sprint at you from inside the Manor to aid in the fight. This second Deadite cannot be seen initially. If they do run out kill them quickly with the shotgun before taking on the large Deadite. If this second grunt doesn't make an appearance, which may happen if you didn't disturb them inside. They will otherwise be waiting in the Manor.

After killing the one or two Deadites enter the Manor through the door the strong Deadite was guarding. Inside, after passing through a tiny entrance area and a second doorway, you'll be in the main hall. Immediately to your left will be stairs with a Deadite on them. Obviously kill them. Also to the left is another corridor that leads to a back exit. Completely ignore this corridor and doorway. It leads back outside and contains nothing of interest. There is also another heavy Deadite guarding that too and a weaker patrolling Deadite. Sometimes, depending on their route, this patrolling Deadite can be triggered so be careful.

Tip #4: The thought of exploration can be enticing, but if you're reading this walkthrough, I do not recommend it. Roaming through areas you are not prepared for is a good way to die quickly. Be smart and follow the safe routes to save supplies and your life.

To your right there is a room with shotgun shells. And if you didn't kill them outside, the second Deadite I mentioned from before. After killing the Deadite(s) in the immediate vicinity, and having looted the ammo boxes, take the stairs to the upper floor. At the top of the stairs, spin around and face the opposite wall. You'll see that this balcony area goes all the way around and there is a room on either side. One on the left and one on the right. Go to the left first, there is a Deadite and a shiny new weapon. Kill the Deadite and take the weapon. Now go over to the room on the right, grabbing the matches just outside of it as you do so. Inside is another weapon, but no Deadite this time. Next, use the window, just right of the fireplace, to jump outside and leave the house. You will drop onto a small roof and can from there jump to the ground. Doing this stops you accidentally triggering any other demonic cronies in the area.

Note #1: Going the long way around and raiding Payne Manor first helps with the fight at the grave site. You now have the best possible weapons which help tremendously.

Follow the next below map, towards the Circus Cages area. It involves you using the exact same main roads but goes up past the Knowby Cabin.

Part 2, Circus Cages  >  Bronson Caves

Resources:
. Circus Cages - x1 Cola, x1 Amulet
. Lucky Valley Lodge - x1 Cola
. Bronson Caves - x4 Shell Boxes, x1 Cola, x1 Amulet
. Deadite - x1 Shell Boxes (Bronson Caves)
. Strong Deadite - x1 Cola (Bronson Caves)

There are four Deadites between Payne Manor and Circus Cages. Deadites two & three will attack you together. Though they are positioned far enough apart that they can be killed individually. Especially now you have the best weapons available.

On the route, keep an eye out for possessed trees too. They cannot be attacked, and you simply have to give them a wide berth. They can be difficult to identify in the darkness amongst the other trees. Staying on the roads helps a great deal in avoiding them.

Now you’re at the Circus Cages, use the torch hanging outside to remove your accumulated fear.

Tip #5: Use fire whenever possible to keep your fear low. Try to save your matches for emergencies and instead use sources of light found around the world.

Next, prepare yourself for a fight. It’s nothing too strenuous, as long as you once again take your time. There are useful goodies here, but there are also Deadites. Even though the game still wants you to go straight to Bronson Caves. Instead take a right here into the Circus Cages area.

You’ll start to walk across a bridge and there is a shotgun lying about half way across, in front of you. Be prepared though, as this shotgun is guarded by a portal trap. Not that you even need the shotgun at this point.

Tip #6: Portal traps are almost invisible but do display a vertical blurred line. The only way to trigger these is to get close enough for the Deadite to leap out at you. Be aware that portals will stagger you when triggered but remain calm and gather your composure. When the Deadite leaps out, he will damage you, but only a very small amount. All the portals on this mission only spawn a single Deadite grunt each.

Kill the Deadite and continue across the bridge and towards the centre of the settlement. There will be demonic symbols on the ground and a chainsaw lying in the middle of them. Again ignore the chainsaw. Be aware though, that there are two more portal traps guarding the weapon. Slowly edging forward will allow you to trigger only one at a time. Kill the first Deadite and only then activate the second. Deal with that second Deadite.

After that confrontation, in front of you there should be a large cabin. Walk directly ahead, up the muddy bank. Go around to the left and enter in through the door on that side. And get looting. See the map below of how to navigate the Circus Cages.

Tip #7: Make sure you use both healing and shield items sparingly. They are scarce and should be saved as long as possible into each mission before being used.

Leave the cabin, through the same door, and head back towards the main road. Brace yourself for a fourth portal trap. It is on the small path that leads out of the Circus Cages back to the main road. Trigger it and kill the Deadite.

Note #2: You will return to both Payne Manor and the Circus Cages a little while later for story reasons. But then there will be no enemies to fight. You having killed them all already. It's better to battle these enemies now and grab the loot. It leaves you better prepared for later sections of the level. Enemies and trees never reset.

Now back on the main road, you must go straight past the Lucky Valley Lodge area. You’ll pass by the top house of the two and set off a Deadite standing in the front garden. Kill them but be prepared for a second Deadite which will run at you from the woods to the right of the house. Loot the house and then continue back to Bronson Caves.

Beware of two spaced apart Deadites hiding just off of the road in the treeline as you go. Just like before. Take them on, one at a time, as you encounter them.

You should now be at the Bronson Caves area, and hopefully still have plenty of health. There are two Deadite guards up the ramp that leads to the cave. I recommend killing one with the Shotgun. The other can then be killed with the chainsaw.

Move up to the mouth of the cave, there will be a torch hanging up and some shotgun shells in a cart. Gather the shells and then stand near the torch if necessary.

From the mouth there is an entrance dead ahead and an offshoot entrance to your right. Use the one dead ahead. There will be more shells to collect and a single patrolling Deadite down a path on another right as you enter. This cave system loops, so it is easy to stay on the correct path. Once the Deadite has been dealt with, proceed forward into the large open chamber. A little way in, there will be a supply crate to your left on the floor and large boulder in the centre of the room. This boulder will be to your right from this position. Ignore the supply crate for now and slowly proceed to the centre of the room.

Hiding behind the boulder is another strong Deadite. Kill him, using the same tactics you used previously and then loot the area. This big Deadite drops a healing, Cola. On the floor there is also the supply crate you just passed. Open it and take the loot. Finally there is Linda’s Pendant, the item you need to progress the mission.

OBJECTIVE 2

Bronson Caves  >  Circus Cages

Resources:
. Circus Cages - x1 Cola, x1 Amulet

Leave the cave and proceed back to the Circus Cages, retaking the exact same path to avoid new enemies. As I've said, enemies will not respawn, and trees will not reset, so once a path has been cleared, it will be safe.

Now you have the Pendant you will be prompted to return to the Circus Cages to collect a shovel. Unfortunately the shovel cannot be obtained beforehand. The game tells you that the shovel is in the big cabin that you already looted. Go and take it. As you are re-crossing the bridge, out of the Circus Cages, back to main road. Jump down off bridge to the right. There is a supply chest to loot. Follow the river to the exit. A small bank. A Deadite will be waiting. Simply kill the Deadite at the exit. From here loop round to the right, back into Circus Cages. Watch out for a possessed tree that'll be waiting though. Keep to the right as much as possible to avoid it and loop back over the bridge to the main road.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OBJECTIVE 3

Circus Cages  >  Linda’s Grave Site (Demonic Treehouse)

Resources:
. None

Now to get to the Linda's grave site. Follow the main roads once again, back towards Payne Manor. You will see the red prompt on screen. Keep following the main road until you are roughly 59/60m away. At this point you can leave the road and make a direct beeline, through the woods, for the grave site. There will be no enemies to deal with by approaching the site this way.

Follow this map for detail.

Be prepared for another standoff once you reach the grave. You will be walled into a small combat zone, by impenetrable fog, and need to kill six Deadites to continue. Five will be regular grunts, but the sixth will be another heavy. The enemies do spawn rapidly one after the other, and come from all around, so remain on your toes. If you are quick enough, you can kill each of them, before the next one arrives. And the strong Deadite will always spawn last. Again use the shotgun on the big Deadite. And aim for head for increased damage. The strong weapons from Payne Manor really do help here.

If necessary, quickly spend a match before departing the grave site and light a fire to remove your accrued fear.

OBJECTIVE 4

Linda’s Grave Site (Demonic Treehouse)  >  Payne Manor

Resources:
. None

Now you unfortunately need to head back to Payne Manor, as this is the order the game naturally progresses in. As you've already looted it there is nothing left in the Manor to take, but you have to return, nonetheless. The game does not recognise that you have already been.

Following the same road-based path, quickly sprint back to Payne Manor. Follow the map below if needed. Again remember the woods have enemies, so the roads help to avoid them. The northern outskirts has possessed trees and portal traps. It's far smarter to avoid these encounters.

Also you do not need to reserve your stamina for any combat right now. You can simply sprint to Payne Manor. The second you enter the Manor the object is complete, and you can leave. Just make sure you enter the exact same door from before. This makes sure that you evade any new enemies. And that is objective four complete.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OBJECTIVE 5

Payne Manor  >  Knowby Cabin

Resources:
. Deadite - x1 Shell Box (Knowby Cabin)

From the Manor head back up to the Knowby cabin for the final confrontation. See the map below for the best route. But as before, always use the roads. There should be no encounters on the way back.

As you leave the fork and start on the short road back to the Cabin, up on your right is a torch. Use this to quickly remove any remaining fear, then pop back to the road and the cabin. However, use the embankment to reach and leave the torch. Using the convenient wood-laden pathway puts you in front of a possessed tree.

At this point, now you're at the cabin, you should have roughly forty shotgun shells, three healing items and three amulet items. If not, this part is still doable, but you'll have less room for error. The final boss is quick. You'll need shells for combat, and some heals for when you're inevitably caught off guard.

At the cabin, nothing will happen until you go to the shed, as the game wants you to. Once you approach the tool shed, the area will be walled off again in a thick fog. And boss Deadite, Henrietta, will appear. Alongside her another basic Deadite will appear. Kill the grunt quickly with the shotgun and then follow the below carefully.

Boss Method:

Route.
Run a circuit through the cabin. From the front door run straight through to the back door, take a left and loop back around the front door. Rinse and repeat.

Attack.
Fire one shot into Henrietta, sprint away to make space, turn and fire another shot. Again, sprint away to make space for a reload. Rinse and repeat. Don't get greedy with attacks. Shoot - run - shoot - run - reload - run. Repeat until she's dead. Henrietta is very strong and very fast, so you certainly do not want to get into melee combat with her. Shooting twice or reloading when she's near, is guaranteed bad news for you. She cannot be stunned and will cover ground much to quickly for you to recover and evade her successful. Sprinting though, gives you a couple of seconds grace period for you to either attack or reload.

Defence.
Always keep your armour levels up with amulets and health up with cola. But remember that these break running too. Use them as needed as an alternative to shooting or reloading, as to not break your flow.

It's easily the toughest part of the level. Her speed, strength and stun lock attacks are unmatched. But she can be overcome with the above strategy.

When she is dead, stick Linda's head in the vice to complete the mission.
